Upgrading Solar Energy: How g-CNT Makes Solar Cells More Efficient
Researchers are constantly looking for ways to make solar cells capture more energy. In this study, they focused on improving "bifacial" solar cells, which are designed to absorb sunlight from both the front and the back. To give the cells a power boost, the scientists mixed a highly conductive carbon material known as g-CNT (graphenated-carbon nanotubes) into the cell's standard base material. Instead of just applying a single standard layer of this mixture, they creatively stacked a clear, transparent layer on top of the g-CNT enhanced layer to maximize how much light the cell could trap.
The results of this new design were highly successful. The researchers discovered a "sweet spot" for the mixture—adding exactly 0.0050% of g-CNT provided the absolute best results. When they combined this perfect recipe with their stacked layer design, the solar cell's overall power efficiency jumped by nearly 57% compared to using basic, unmodified materials. However, they also noted that adding too much g-CNT was a bad idea; it made the material too dark and ended up trapping the electrical charges instead of letting them flow freely.
The main reason this upgrade works so well is that g-CNT acts like a fast-moving superhighway for electricity. It significantly lowers the internal resistance of the solar cell, allowing electrical charges to move much quicker and with far less energy loss. Furthermore, the layered design proved exceptionally good at catching the weaker light that bounces onto the back of the solar panel. Overall, this study shows that combining g-CNT with a stacked layer design is a smart and highly effective way to build the next generation of powerful solar cells.
